Prater ca. 1930

The Prater is one of Vienna’s most iconic spaces. Originally the hunting grounds of Austria’s ruling family, it opened to the public in 1766 and quickly became the center of Vienna’s entertainment and amusement culture. In a city known for its rigid sense of tradition and hierarchy and emphasis on high culture, the Prater has consistently served as a counter-cultural space that is at once extraterritorial and quintessentially Austrian. This talk will outline a new book project that examines the history of Europe’s oldest urban amusement park from its origins to the present.
