This track is constructed around a central specialized area selected by the student; for example, the history of communication, the history of women; 20th century history. A student in track A will receive the help of an adviser in putting together a program. A student in the personal track will write a thesis and sit for a final examination. Students in this track will select three seminars on the subject of the specialization, and will be obligated to present a seminar paper in one of the seminars and a report in the two others. In the first year of studies, the students will participate in an interdisciplinary seminar and a methodology seminar; in the second year, in two methods seminars. They will also learn a foreign language at the beginning and advanced level in accordance with the field of their specialization.

The rest of the courses for completing the required quota of studies will be determined by the chairperson of the departmental M.A. committee. The student's program of studies must obtain the approval of the Dean of the Graduate School. Foreign language courses that the department obligates students to take are not counted as semester-hours toward a degree and are not weighted in the final grade.

In each of the tracks, a student must take at least 28 weekly hours per semester in the main department. Students in track A and in the personal track need to add to this total the foreign language courses, each in accordance with a student's own obligations. Students in track B who specialize in the ancient period or the Middle Ages are not obligated to take foreign languages (Latin and Greek).

A transfer from track A to track B or the reverse is possible with the approval of the departmental M.A. committee. In the event of such a transfer, the student will be required to fulfill all the demands of the new track; however, exemptions may be obtained for studies in the old track as partial fulfillment of the requirements for the new track.
