Conditions of Acceptance
Any student who has a M.A. in General History from a university in Israel or abroad and who had an overall course grade average of at least 80 and a thesis grade of at least 90 is entitled to present his/her candidacy as a doctoral student.
Structure of Studies
The studies at this level are divided into two stages:
- Stage A research student, not to exceed a period of 12 months.
- Stage B research student.
A candidate who has been admitted into the Ph.D. program and for whom one of the department lecturers has agreed to serve as dissertation adviser will work on preparing a detailed dissertation proposal during the candidacy period. An advisory committee will be appointed for each research student in accordance with regulations. With the approval of the proposal by the adviser, the advisory committee, and the departmental doctoral committee, the candidate will be accepted as a Stage B research student.
The dissertation adviser and the advisory committee will set up a curriculum for the research student, which will be approved by the departmental doctoral committee. This committee is entitled to impose an examination (oral or written) in those courses that the candidate is required to take; seminars, however, require only the student's active participation. The student must also show a knowledge of three languages relevant to the area of research. Toward the end of the writing of the dissertation, the student will lecture on it to members of the department and the members of the advisory committee. With the completion of the research, the student will present the printed work, signed by the advisor and approved by the advisory committee, to the chairperson of the departmental doctoral committee. After a check is made that the student has fulfilled all requirements in accordance with the regulations, the departmental committee will recommend the appointment of referees.
